Video poker is a game of chance since the cards are chosen by a random number generator. However, there are some tips or do’s and don’ts to remember to give your self the best possible chance of ending up a winner, although there is never a guarantee to win in any gambling games.
Here are some tips to improve your video poker play:
1. If you think you have cards that cannot be used to form any winning hand, you must discard your current cards and draw all new ones. Never keep lousy cards.
2. Do not break a straight to draw to a flush. It is better to go for the one card draw if you have a four- card straight that can be completed on either end. However, it is not advisable to draw a card to fill the middle of an incomplete straight.
3. Instead of holding a high card, it is better to keep a pair because video poker odds and payout percentages are in favor of a three-of-kind over one high pair. But never keep an extra high card along with your current pair as it may lessen your odds of drawing three of a kind.
4. Go for the royal flush if you have a choice between drawing two cards to complete a 3-card royal or keeping a low pair, a 4-card flush or a 4-card-open-ended straight.
5. Better keep the low pair instead of drawing to a straight since the odds are better of drawing three of a kind.
Aside from these 5 quick poker tips, always look for jacks or better machines that pay 9 coins for a full house and six coins for a flush. And understand the pay table for each game you play. Above all, take your time to make sure you make the correct decision.

If you are playing video poker for the first time there is no doubt that you will ask the question whether video poker like live poker. Both version of poker are nearly the same and the only difference is that while you play with real people in the live version of the game, in video poker you play against computer-generated graphics. Do not be fooled into thinking that you can beat these images on the screen each and every time. A small mistake or hesitation on your side might cause you to loose that particular round. These opponents are very smart.
The computer you are playing video poker on uses special software to generate images of people and these are your opponents. Thanks to technology, these opponents of yours have inbuilt artificial intelligence and after observing your game plan for a few rounds, they can reasonably predict what will your next move be. The do this so amazingly that even the seasoned poker player will think that there are real people online who are controlling their opponents. Thanks to their computer interface and intelligence, this is what the modern generation video poker game can achieve.

Just as is the case in “real world” poker, all video poker players have different ways of handling the kicker card. Some players hold on to it for as long as is reasonably possible, while other video poker players cannot seem to get rid of them soon enough. All methods of course have their own strengths and weaknesses, and there really is no best way to deal with them.
In the Double-Double Bonus Poker or DDBP variation of video poker, this is a common enough subject of debate. By most expert video poker players’ estimation, the best thing to do with the kicker cards is to get rid of them quickly and try to get one more shot at the fourth ace. Of course this rule only applies if you already have three aces and one kicker card.
A notable exception to this rule is in the Triple Double Bonus variation of video poker where it may be beneficial to hold on to the kicker card for a while, at least until you have had two shots at the fourth ace. Of course some training and experience in building an effective video poker strategy would help in this situation, in order to get better chances at a good game return.
